The 1 inch wooden Dowel Cap has a 3/8 inch hole drilled partially through with a slight flat area. Because this ball has a flat area, they are quite often used as doll heads or toy pulls. Made to cap a dowel so the dowel does not slide or cause a safety concern on the end. They are sometimes called a doll head bead. They are also perfect as legs on stools or drawer pulls.
